About fruit & vegetables
Before photography, nurseries and gardeners named their fruit from painted plates. The pomologies, books of fruit varieties, record hundreds of apples, pears, plums, peaches and grapes, many of which are now lost. Knoop's Pomologia of 1758, the Dutch and Belgian fruit books of the 1870s and the French grape varieties of 1890 are all here.
Tropical fruit was a marvel to European readers. De Bry engraved the pineapple and durian from travellers' reports in 1601, and Berthe Hoola van Nooten painted the mangosteen, rambutan and cacao of Java from life for her chromolithographs of 1863.

Questions about fruit & vegetables
Are fruit prints a good choice for a kitchen or dining room?
Yes, and they are traditionally hung there. Matched pairs and sets from one fruit book, such as the grape or pear series, hang especially well together.
