About trees, palms & ferns
Trees, palms and ferns have their own long tradition in print. Duhamel du Monceau and Le Bas engraved the forest trees of France, Blume described the palms of the East Indies, and in the 1850s Britain caught fern fever: E.J. Lowe's colour-printed Ferns British and Exotic fed a craze that filled Victorian parlours with fern cases.
Here too are the ferns of Java in hand-coloured lithographs of 1829, club mosses, horsetails, lichens and seaweeds, the quieter plants that botanists loved.

Questions about trees, palms & ferns
Why do so many fern prints date from the 1850s and 1860s?
Because of pteridomania, the Victorian fern craze. Ferns were collected, grown and drawn by everyone, and publishers answered with books of colour-printed plates.
