Gardens of the Quirinal Palace, Rome, Benoist 19th Century Lithograph

This elegant tinted lithograph captures the lower gardens of the Palazzo del Quirinale, one of Rome’s most important papal and later royal residences. The composition centers on an ornamental fountain framed by trees, terraces, and classical architecture, with figures strolling leisurely through the landscaped grounds. Philippe Benoist balances architectural structure with natural elements, creating a serene and refined vision of Rome’s elite spaces.

Issued in Paris between 1867 and 1869 as part of “Rome dans sa Grandeur,” this plate exemplifies the series’ ambition to document Rome’s civic, religious, and aristocratic monuments at a moment of political transition. The Quirinal Palace, long associated with papal authority, is here presented as a place of cultivated leisure and order, reflecting 19th-century ideals of urban beauty.

Benoist’s precise draughtsmanship and subtle tinting give depth to the foliage and masonry alike, while small staffage figures animate the scene without overwhelming its architectural focus. The print offers strong decorative appeal for interiors while also serving as a valuable historical document of Rome’s urban landscape before modern alterations.

Condition report: Even age toning; minor foxing mostly confined to margins; image area clean and crisp.

Framing tips: Light stone-colored mat with a gilded or warm wood frame to echo the classical subject.
