Six botanical chromolithographs of North American wild plants, from Thomas Meehan's The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States in Their Botanical, Horticultural, and Popular Aspects, published by L. Prang and Company of Boston in 1879. Each plate is a full-color chromolithograph on its own sheet, with the volume and plate number at the top and the Latin name lettered below the plant.
The plates show a purple-flowered spiderwort with its long grass-like leaves, a nodding red-flowered plant with finely cut leaves and a feathery seed head, a branch of yellow trumpet-shaped flowers, a fern with the rows of spore cases on the underside of its fronds, a group of violets with purple blooms, and a wood anemone with white flowers. Each plant is drawn with its roots and, in several cases, enlarged details of the flower or seed beside it.
Prang was the Boston firm that was best known for color printing in America. The set of plates is offered as six separate sheets, each carrying its own plate lettering.
