Three botanical chromolithographs of North American wild plants, from Thomas Meehan's The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States in Their Botanical, Horticultural, and Popular Aspects, published by L. Prang and Company of Boston in 1879. Each is a full-color plate on its own sheet, with the volume and plate number at the top and the Latin name lettered at the foot.
The plates show Cuphea viscosissima, the blue waxweed, a branching plant with small pink flowers and a sticky stem; Thalictrum dioicum, the early meadow-rue, with its rounded lobed leaves and airy clusters of small flowers on slender stalks; and Anemone patens var. Nuttalliana, the pasque flower, with a bluish-violet bloom, finely cut leaves and a feathery seed head. Each plant is drawn with its roots, and small numbered details of the flower or fruit are given beside them.
The volume was issued by L. Prang and Company of Boston, the firm best known for its work in color printing, with the plates drawn for Thomas Meehan's survey of native American flowers and ferns.
