Noble Rhubarb Botanical Illustration by Louis van Houtte, 19th Century
This botanical illustration features Rheum nobile, commonly known as Noble Rhubarb, a striking plant renowned for its towering, layered appearance.
The artwork, measuring approximately 24 x 16 cm (9.5 x 6.5 inches), is part of the renowned "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe," a collection by Louis van Houtte, a distinguished 19th-century Belgian horticulturist.
Van Houtte's botanical illustrations are celebrated for their precision and vibrant portrayal of diverse plant species.
The Rheum nobile depicted here is native to the Himalayas, specifically the Sikkim region, as indicated by the label Himalaya Sikkim. This plant is adapted to high-altitude environments, where it forms tall, conical structures composed of overlapping leaves. These leaves have a distinctive translucent quality, which helps protect the plant's flowers from harsh weather conditions while allowing light to penetrate.
The term "rustique" suggests that this plant is hardy, capable of withstanding the challenging conditions of its native mountainous habitat.
The lithograph, produced using the lithography technique with original hand coloring, captures the vivid greens and yellows of the plant, contrasting against a subtle mountainous backdrop.
The print is well-preserved, with the colors and fine details remaining clear and vibrant, showcasing the meticulous artistry and scientific interest that characterize Louis van Houtte's botanical illustrations.
