Eight plates of meadow grasses of the genus Poa, original hand-colored engravings from about 1830. Each sheet carries a single species drawn full length with the root, stem and flowering head, and the Latin name is engraved at the lower right of the plate. Small enlargements of the florets and flower parts appear beside each plant.
The species named in the old listing are Poa trivialis (rough meadow grass), Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass), Poa compressa (Canada bluegrass), Poa rigida (rigid meadow grass), Poa angustifolia (narrow-leaved bluegrass), Poa alpina (alpine meadow grass), Poa laxa (loose meadow grass) and Poa bulbosa (bulbous meadow grass). The coloring is restrained and limited mostly to pale green and brown washes on leaves and stems, so the plates are chiefly line drawings of structure. The plates are numbered at the upper right of each sheet.
Several of these grasses are lawn and pasture species that later became part of the American landscape as well, including Kentucky bluegrass, which is now one of the commonest lawn grasses in the United States.
