White cupflower and hairy toadflax, a hand-colored lithograph of 1874 from the second series of Alpine Plants, published in London by George Bell & Sons. The plate is numbered "VII" and lettered with the two Latin names, Nierembergia rivularis and Linaria villosa.

The upper plant, Nierembergia rivularis, grows as a low rosette of rounded green leaves from which rise several large white, cup-shaped flowers with a yellow center, shown against a soft gray cloud-like ground. Below it, Linaria villosa trails diagonally across the lower half of the sheet in a loose, spreading mat of small gray-green leaves, with small lilac and pale violet flowers marked with yellow.

Nierembergia rivularis is a native of southern South America, from where it reached European gardens, while the toadflax is a Mediterranean plant, so the plate combines a South American and a European species under the alpine heading.
