Love-lies-bleeding, variegated amaranth and cockscomb, three original color-printed lithographs from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, 1897. Each plate is on its own sheet and is lettered below with the plant name, its Latin name and "Nat. size."
The first shows love-lies-bleeding (Amarantus caudatus) as a stem of broad green leaves with long, tassel-like crimson flower spikes hanging down, with a seed and small enlarged flowers drawn alongside. The second shows variegated amaranth (Amarantus tricolor), a spike of narrow leaves splashed in crimson, orange, yellow and green, with a dark seed and enlarged flower parts at the base. The third shows cockscomb (Celosia cristata) with a great ruffled crest of deep magenta on a thick stem with pale green leaves and small flowers drawn separately.
Amaranthus caudatus is a South American plant that has long been grown for ornament and as a grain crop, while cockscomb comes from the tropics of the Old World.
