Antique Coconut Palm Botanical Study, Cocos nucifera, c.1831

Description:

This highly detailed botanical engraving presents a full analytical study of the coconut palm, including flowers, fruit, cross-sections, and trunk structure. It is one of the most technically complete plates in the series.

Published in Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde, the image documents a plant of enormous economic importance, used for food, oil, fiber, and construction.

Original hand coloring is restrained and precise, allowing the structural complexity to remain legible.

Condition report:

Moderate toning and light foxing. No damage.

Framing tips:

A pale grey or parchment mat with a simple dark frame suits the technical focus.

Technique: Copper engraving with original hand coloring

Maker: Jonathan Carl Zenker, Germany, 1831 to 1832
