Antique Sago Palm Botanical Print, Sagus Farinifera, c.1831

Description:

This original botanical engraving depicts the sago palm, Sagus Farinifera, including trunk, flower structures, and fruit, accompanied by a human figure for scale. Sago was a crucial starch source in Southeast Asia.

Issued in Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde, the plate documents a staple food plant central to regional economies rather than European consumption.

Original hand coloring gives the palm strong sculptural presence.

Condition report:

Moderate toning with scattered light spotting.

Framing tips:

A warm cream mat and natural wood frame complement the tropical subject.

Technique: Copper engraving with original hand coloring

Maker: Jonathan Carl Zenker, Germany, 1831 to 1832
