Title: Hand-Colored Botanical Engravings of Gooseberry and Currant Varieties, 1902

Description:

This charming trio of hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 portrays three species from the Ribes genus, renowned for their edible berries and distinctive foliage. The plates feature Ribes grossularia (Gooseberry), Ribes alpinum (Tasteless Mountain Currant), and Ribes rubrum var. sativum (Red Currant). Together they form a beautifully balanced composition illustrating both wild and cultivated members of this familiar fruit-bearing family.

The Gooseberry is delicately rendered with its lobed leaves, pale green berries, and characteristic thorny stems. The accompanying flower and seed details demonstrate its intricate botanical structure. The Tasteless Mountain Currant is shown as a more modest alpine species, bearing small clusters of reddish-purple berries and finely serrated leaves, a plant admired for its hardiness more than its fruit. Completing the set is the Red Currant, a domesticated garden favorite, depicted with its hanging clusters of translucent scarlet berries and broad, veined leaves, a perfect example of botanical elegance combined with horticultural charm.

Each engraving reveals meticulous hand coloring over precise engraved outlines, with careful attention to texture and natural shading. The use of soft greens and rich berry tones gives the series a vibrant yet refined appearance, exemplifying the balance between scientific study and artistic refinement typical of early 20th-century English botanical works.

Condition report: Excellent for age. Slight toning and faint specks in the margins consistent with age. Strong plate impressions with clean lines and wide borders intact. No tears, stains, or repairs.

Framing tips: This trio displays beautifully as a coordinated set when framed in warm natural wood or gold frames with ivory or light green mounts. The vivid berry tones contrast attractively against the pale background, making them ideal for a kitchen, dining area, or conservatory where natural motifs and soft color harmony are desired.
